In our house, as per the French tradition, we celebrate certain fetes- for example, our son's middle name is Valentino, so his fete is Valentine's Day; there's plenty of room for romance and gift giving elsewhere. I'm often bothered by holidays that have come to be called 'hallmark occasions' and feel immense commercial pressure to succumb to advertising, merchandising and suggestive feel-good music often played in shopping malls. (It's one of the reason I love shopping locally in our open-air mall!) I don't like to be dictated to as to when and why I buy (or make) my loved ones gifts.
But then, I discovered this site where they invite you to celebrate Generosity Day as an alternative to commercialised Valentine's Day. The idea is that instead of buying an unwanted(needed) gift you could make a donation to their not-for-profit organisation. It's a lovely sentiment and a lovely website with plenty of ideas of how to live consciously as part of a kindred community. - Well worth making a cup of tea for...
